There is an old saying, “What is in a name?”. This rings very true when it comes to starting up your very own blog. Picking the name is just about as important as what you want to write about. In fact, the two go hand in hand.
Since you want to start a blog, we are going to assume you have an idea of what you are wanting to write about. You do have an idea don’t you? The name you pick should give an idea of what your blog is about. It is the very first thing that people will see. They will see it before they ever even get to your blog. When people see the name, they will make a judgement call on whether they want to visit your blog or not…so it is fairly important. You can go off topic sometimes, but the bulk of the posts you write should really stay on the topic that you have chosen.
If you are going to write about cats, you do not want a name like “Suzy Sees the World”, and if your blog is about travel, you do not want to go with a name like “Cute Kitty Costumes”. This may seem like common sense to most people, but you would not believe the number of blogs that exist that did just that very thing.
Now how do you go about picking the name for your blog? There are a few simple rules to keep in mind.
- Your name must be memorable
- Your name must be easy to spell
- Your name must describe the theme of your blog, or establish your brand name.
With those three rules as your guide, picking a name should be fairly easy.
Making your name memorable. Think of all the blogs you currently read. Notice how the names stand out in your mind? I am also sure that you have come across a blog like “Steve’s Stuff”. Now Steve may have had some great things on his blog, but the name is so…blah. There is nothing there to make it memorable.
Easy to spell names are also very important. If you go back to all of those blogs that you currently read. Think of their names for a moment. Notice how short all the words in the name are, and how easy they are to spell? This is what you are going for. Now, “Audrey’s Auditorium of Onomatopoeia” may in fact be memorable…it is nowhere near easy to spell.
Lastly, the name you pick must describe what you will be blogging about. But we have already covered that.
Now that you have an idea for your name, think of a few variations. Google each of them, to make sure that nobody else has a blog with the same name. And write down your favorite that is not being used. You will need it in the next step. Hosting.
